MOHALI, April 24:— Two unidentified men fired at a policeman during a vehicle inspection near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Market in Sunny Enclave late Monday night and managed to escape, police said.
Senior constable Gaurav Kumar, deployed on night patrol, stopped the duo around 8:50 p.m. after spotting them on a motorcycle without a registration plate near a local temple.
“They were wearing helmets and appeared suspicious,” Kumar said, adding that he immediately alerted the Sunny Enclave police post and returned to the spot with backup.
As officers questioned the riders and asked for vehicle documents, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and opened fire.
“Thankfully, no one was injured,” a police official said.
The assailants fled before police could detain them.
An investigation is underway, with officials from the Kharar City police station reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations.
“The lack of a number plate complicates the identification process, but we’re working on tracking them down,” the official added.
Police have registered a case and said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspects.
