Singer Booked for Performing Banned Song at PU Concert

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, July 30 — Haryanvi folk singer Masoom Sharma has been booked by Chandigarh Police for allegedly performing a banned song during a live concert at Panjab University (PU) on March 28 — the same evening a student was fatally attacked on campus.

The song, Chambal Ke Daku, is among those blacklisted by the Haryana government for promoting violence, gun culture, and glorification of banditry. Authorities said Sharma’s performance violated a written undertaking he had submitted to the event organisers and police prior to the concert, promising not to sing any banned or controversial tracks.

An FIR was filed at Sector 11 police station following a formal complaint. Police sources said Sharma’s actions are now under “serious scrutiny” given the nature of the lyrics and the violent incident that occurred later the same night. PU student Aditya was assaulted with sharp-edged weapons during the event and later succumbed to his injuries.

“This is not just about breaching an agreement—it’s about fostering an environment where violence is normalised,” a senior police officer said.

The Haryana government has blacklisted around 30 songs for glorifying weapons and criminal lifestyles. Several of these are associated with Sharma’s discography, officials said.

Investigators are now examining whether Sharma’s performance had any indirect influence on the violence that followed. Further legal action is being considered.
