Patiala, August 25: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday interrogated former Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia for nearly two and a half hours inside Nabha jail in connection with a case involving missing land records.
Officials said the questioning, led by Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma and SP (Investigation) Gurbans Singh, was carried out following court orders. “Judicial permission was sought before proceeding with the interrogation,” a senior officer confirmed. The probe relates to FIR number 2, lodged in 2022 at Majithia police station.
Majithia, a senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader, is already behind bars in a separate corruption case registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was arrested on June 25 at his residence in Amritsar. Recently, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau filed a 40,000-page chargesheet against him in a Mohali court concerning disproportionate assets.
His legal troubles stretch back to December 2021, when the then Congress-led government booked him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He spent over five months in Patiala jail before securing bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2022.
On August 18, a Mohali court rejected his latest bail plea and extended his judicial custody until August 28. The SIT’s latest questioning marks an escalation in the missing revenue records case as investigators examine multiple charges against the former minister.
