New Delhi, February 1: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to outline the nation’s economic priorities today after completing the customary pre-presentation meeting with President Droupadi Murmu. The meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan marks the final ceremonial step before the 2026-27 Union Budget is laid before Parliament.
The 2026-27 presentation is widely anticipated to provide a buffer against global trade frictions and potential US tariffs. Economic observers expect a continuation of the government’s focus on sustainable growth and strict fiscal management. Sitharaman arrived at the President’s house after a traditional photo session with her team of six secretaries and Minister of State Pankaj Chaudhary at her office.
Continuing the shift away from the traditional leather briefcase, the Finance Minister held the tablet used for the digital budget presentation, wrapped in its iconic red silk cover. This ninth straight budget marks a significant milestone in her leadership of the Ministry of Finance.
“The Finance Minister called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan before heading to Parliament,” a government representative mentioned during the morning proceedings. Following the presidential visit, the focus shifted to the Cabinet meeting where the financial proposals received formal authorization for the upcoming fiscal year.
