Smugglers abandon bike, timber during Yamunanagar forest raid

Wood mafia adopts new tactics to transport illegal khair through Chhachhrauli

by TheReportingTimes

Yamunanagar, Feb 15: Authorities in Yamunanagar have uncovered a new method used by the wood mafia to transport illicit timber following a high-speed chase and seizure in the Chhachhrauli region. Smugglers are increasingly using motorcycles to move stolen khair wood, attempting to bypass traditional forest checkpoints.

The incident unfolded after the Wildlife Department received information that timber was being moved out of the Darpur forest. Under the supervision of the Deputy Forest Range Officer, officials intercepted a motorcycle believed to be carrying the contraband. However, the suspects abandoned their transport and escaped on foot into the dense foliage.

“During search, the team found three stumps of khair hidden under a bundle of grass placed on the bike,” affirmed Inspector Lilu Ram. The inspector noted that the use of grass as a cover is a deliberate tactic to avoid detection by patrolling teams.

The investigation has since expanded to the nearby forest area, where officials recovered additional evidence of recent tree felling. The Wildlife Department has named Alim, Talim, Akbar, and Dilshad as the primary suspects in the case. These individuals, all hailing from Darpur village, now face legal action as the department maintains its crackdown on local timber smuggling rings.
