Dera Bassi, June 6: A notorious interstate snatcher sustained a fractured leg on Wednesday after attempting to escape police custody near a bridge on the Ramgarh–Mubarikpur road.
The accused, identified as Ajay Kumar, alias Billa, was being escorted by a police team for the recovery of a stolen mobile phone when he tried to flee by jumping from the police vehicle. His attempt failed, and he fractured his right leg during the fall.
He was immediately given medical aid, according to Inspector Sumit Mor, SHO Dera Bassi, who was leading the team.
Ajay was brought to Dera Bassi on a three-day production warrant from Sudhowala Jail in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, in connection with an ongoing investigation under FIR No. 12/2025, registered under Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“During preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed to involvement in at least 18 snatching cases across the tricity region,” said a police spokesperson.
Records show Ajay has a criminal history, with six snatching cases already registered against him in Rishikesh, Panchkula and Dera Bassi.
Police said further investigation is underway to identify his accomplices and recover more stolen property.
