SRINAGAR, Dec 31: Authorities have stepped up security arrangements across Kashmir as fresh snowfall coincided with a surge of tourists arriving in the Valley ahead of New Year celebrations, officials said on Wednesday.
Popular destinations, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, witnessed heavy footfall, with hotels reporting full occupancy, according to officials familiar with the arrangements.
“Security has been tightened across Kashmir to ensure a safe and orderly festive environment,” an official said. “Frisking and vehicle inspections have been intensified, and a close vigil is being maintained at key entry points such as Qazigund.”
Personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the CRPF and other forces have been deployed in strength at tourist hubs and crowded areas. Senior officers reviewed security arrangements at Lal Chowk in Srinagar late Wednesday evening and interacted with visitors welcoming the New Year 2026, officials said.
“All forces are on high alert, and crowded areas are being monitored round the clock,” the official added.
Security deployment has also been strengthened along the Gulmarg–Tangmarg road to manage traffic and ensure public safety, while checkpoints and regular patrolling have been put in place across tourist destinations.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall across the Valley from Wednesday night to Thursday morning, with heavier snowfall expected in higher reaches.
Director of Tourism Kashmir Syed Qamar Sajad said the snowfall has played a key role in reviving tourism in the Valley.
“Fresh snowfall has been decisive in encouraging tourists to travel. The Valley looks festive, and people did not want to miss this moment,” Sajad said, adding that tourist footfall had returned to near-normal levels after a brief dip earlier this year.
MLA Gulmarg Farooq Ahmad Shah said the resort town continues to play a vital role in winter tourism revival. “Skiing here is affordable, hotels are prepared, and arrangements are in place to welcome visitors,” he said.
Superintendent of Police Baramulla Gurinderpal Singh extended New Year greetings and urged people to act responsibly. “Security deployment has been doubled compared to routine arrangements, and special verification drives have been conducted to ensure peaceful celebrations,” he said.
