CHANDIGARH, September 1 — Extensive financial support under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana has helped thousands of families across Punjab access urgent treatment for life-threatening sepsis. Official data shows that state medical institutions processed 12,467 cases of sepsis and septic shock valued at ₹51.58 crore by September 1. Officials stated that severe sepsis treatments made up the majority of cases at 10,961 interventions, while high-dependency septic shock treatments involved ₹7.25 crore in medical claims.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh declared that state health insurance provides a crucial safety net when medical complications escalate without warning. “When it leads to serious circulatory problems and inadequate blood flow to vital organs, the patient may progress to septic shock,” Dr Balbir Singh maintained. He affirmed that cashless coverage under the scheme ensures that families receive immediate critical care, including intravenous fluids, organ support, and mechanical ventilation, without facing crippling financial strain.
Medical specialists called for heightened public awareness regarding early warning signs, especially among infants and elderly patients. Dr Shashi Kant Dhir, Professor and Head of Pediatrics at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, declared that sudden behavioral changes in newborns demand urgent medical assessment. “In newborns, even a small change in behaviour can be an important warning sign,” Dr Dhir stated, adding that low-birth-weight babies face particularly swift health declines.
Health department officials affirmed that preventing severe outcomes relies on both rapid diagnosis and responsible medication practices. Representatives stated that self-prescribing antibiotics or halting prescribed treatments prematurely fuels drug resistance and reduces treatment efficacy. State health leaders maintained that combining state-funded healthcare safety nets with timely medical consultations remains key to saving lives.
