Street Play at Jallianwala Bagh Warns Against Drug Abuse

by TheReportingTimes

Amritsar, 15 August 2025: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Friday organised a street play at the historic Jallianwala Bagh to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illegal trafficking. The programme, attended by the NCB’s Deputy Director General and Joint Director (North Western Zone), drew a large crowd of residents, students, and youth organisations.

The initiative aimed to highlight the severe damage caused by drugs—not just to individual health, but to families, communities, and the nation’s security. Addressing the gathering, the NCB’s chief spokesperson said that while India had achieved freedom from British colonial rule, “our people have become slaves to drugs,” adding that the menace of substance abuse is a serious global issue.

“Drug abuse damages health, breaks up families and weakens communities,” the spokesperson said. “Its impact goes beyond the immediate harm—it causes long-term physical, mental and social suffering. In today’s time, our youth are pushing their lives into darkness because of drugs. They must turn away from such habits, do something meaningful for the country, and inspire others to value life and stay away from this poison.”

The play, presented by students of Khalsa College, Amritsar, portrayed the grim reality of addiction—broken households, loss of opportunities, and the misguidance of young minds. It also underscored how illegal drug trafficking poses a grave threat not only to individual lives but also to national security and the economy.

Organisers urged the audience to remain vigilant, adopt healthy lifestyles, and report any suspicious activities related to drugs to the NCB or local authorities. The role of parents and teachers was emphasised as crucial in shielding children and youth from the lure of narcotics.

The event received an enthusiastic response from the public, with many praising the realistic portrayal of the issue and the strong message delivered. Officials announced that the campaign would continue on Saturday with another awareness programme at the Attari border, aimed at strengthening community resolve to eradicate drug abuse from the grassroots.
