Chandigarh, April 3: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha is set to meet in a special capacity this Baisakhi to introduce a draft law focused on imposing rigorous punishments for acts of religious sacrilege. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan declared the session on Friday, noting that the legislative push follows a directive from the state cabinet to address gaps in the current justice system.

The upcoming session on April 13 is expected to unveil a framework featuring extended jail sentences and heavy fines. This legislative action is intended to safeguard the dignity of all faiths and prevent disruptions to communal peace across the state.

“The proposed legislation is a direct response to a long-standing public demand for justice,” Speaker Sandhwan maintained. He asserted that the government is committed to ensuring that the sanctity of religious sites and texts remains inviolable under the new law.

The SGPC has welcomed the government’s intent but emphasized the need for transparency during the drafting process. By scheduling the debate on one of Punjab’s most significant religious holidays, the administration affirmed its priority to conclude the long-standing socio-political debate surrounding sacrilege with decisive legal action.
