Eastern Hokkaido was shaken by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake early Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The epicenter was located southeast of the Nemuro Peninsula at a depth of approximately 40 kilometres.
“There are no reports of injuries or structural damage so far,” an agency official said. “Authorities have also confirmed that there is no tsunami threat.”
Kyodo News Agency reported that some areas on the northern island experienced shaking just below 5 on Japan’s seven-level seismic intensity scale. The quake struck at 1:40 a.m. local time.
Following the tremor, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency issued an emergency warning, noting that shaking of up to 5 on the Japanese scale could occur. Officials advised residents to stay vigilant as aftershocks remain possible.
