MUMBAI, July 19— The Tata Group announced the creation of a ₹500-crore welfare trust to support victims and families affected by last month’s devastating Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 260 lives.
The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, registered as a public charitable trust in Mumbai, will be jointly funded by Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, with each contributing ₹250 crore.
“The trust will provide both immediate and continuing support to the dependents and next-of-kin of the deceased, to those who were injured, and to all others who are directly or collaterally affected by the accident,” Tata Sons said in a statement.
In addition to compensating the victims’ families and the injured, the trust will extend psychological and material support to first responders, medical professionals, disaster relief teams, social workers, and government personnel who served during the crisis.
A five-member board of trustees will oversee the administration of the fund, ensuring its effective and transparent operation.
The move comes amid growing calls for long-term support to those affected by the tragedy, widely considered one of the worst aviation disasters in the country’s recent history.
