Teacher Dies by Suicide, Blames Colleagues for Harassment

ROPAR, Aug 4 — A female government school teacher in Punjab’s Ropar district died by suicide, allegedly due to prolonged mental harassment by two of her colleagues, police said Saturday.

The body of 36-year-old Mansvi Sharma, who had been missing since July 26, was found in the Ganguwal canal. Police confirmed that she had left a suicide note at her home in Manakpur village, located in the Nangal area, before she disappeared.

In the note, Sharma accused two fellow teachers of mentally harassing her and stated that their actions had pushed her toward the extreme step. “She clearly named the individuals and cited workplace harassment as the reason,” said Nangal Station House Officer Simranjeet Singh.

The officer confirmed that a case had been registered under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “We have initiated an investigation based on the contents of the suicide note. The FIR names two individuals, and further inquiry is underway,” he said.

Despite the registration of the case, no arrests have been made so far.

According to police, preliminary findings indicate suicide, though they are not ruling out further developments pending the investigation. Officials are also examining workplace dynamics at the government primary school where Sharma was posted.

Her death has sparked concerns over the mental well-being of educators, especially women working in remote and rural schools.

Sharma’s family and local residents have demanded swift action and justice. “She was sincere and committed to her students. What happened to her must not be repeated with anyone else,” said a relative, urging authorities to act against those named in her note.
