HISAR, June 27 — Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University in Hisar witnessed heightened tensions on Thursday as student protests intensified following the administration’s move to cut off water supplies and ask students to vacate hostels after semester exams ended.
Postgraduate and undergraduate students, already in conflict with the administration over a set of eight demands, said they were denied basic facilities, including food and shelter. “We were told to leave the hostels immediately, even though some of us had permission to stay during the summer break,” said a female MSc student, alleging that even water was not available.
A message from Additional Warden Nidhi Kamboj circulated on WhatsApp read: “Postgraduate students who have permission for staying in summer break are allowed to stay, otherwise no one will be allowed.” Undergraduate students were reportedly directed to fetch their luggage Thursday night, while the mess remained closed and nightpass requests were redirected to the warden.
Facing these conditions, protesting students began cooking meals at the protest site and declared their intent to continue the sit-in indefinitely. “We will not move until the government gives us written acceptance of our eight demands,” said BSc student Deepanshu. “If there’s no written assurance, we will shut down the university from July 2.”
Among the students’ grievances is the claim by MSc girls that they were marked as failed in the online portal, despite an earlier assurance from the government panel that their exams would be reconducted three weeks later. “This is a tactic to suppress our voices,” a student said.
Student leader Rohit Dalal blamed the Vice Chancellor, Prof. B R Kamboj, for the continued impasse. “The minister had given us a clear commitment. But the VC is refusing to honour it and putting the blame on students instead,” he alleged.
Meanwhile, a university spokesperson defended the administration’s move, stating that vacating hostels after semester-end is a routine practice.
As the standoff continues, students say they are prepared for a prolonged struggle unless their demands are formally accepted by the government.
