MUMBAI, July 15 — Tesla has formally outlined its entry into the Indian electric vehicle market, opening its first showroom in Mumbai and confirming an ambitious rollout plan that includes sales, charging infrastructure, and direct-to-consumer operations in key cities.
According to a Reuters report citing a top Tesla executive, the company will initiate sales with a redesigned Model Y, with initial registrations opening in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. The launch is part of Tesla’s broader push to establish a firm presence in India, the world’s third-largest automobile market.
“This is Tesla’s first step toward an official presence in India,” the executive said, adding that the company plans to invest heavily in both charging and after-sales service infrastructure to support its long-term expansion.
Ahead of customer deliveries, expected to begin in the third quarter, Tesla is deploying its next-generation V4 Superchargers, which can recharge up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes. The charging network includes:
- Mumbai: 4 Supercharging stations with a total of 16 chargers
- Delhi: 4 Supercharging stations, also with 16 chargers
- Destination Charging: 16 additional public destination chargers in locations such as shopping malls
Tesla’s direct-to-consumer model, already established in the U.S. and Europe, will be replicated in India, bypassing traditional dealership networks.
The Model Y rear-wheel drive will retail at around $69,770 (approximately ₹59.9 lakh), making India one of Tesla’s most expensive markets. The long-range rear-wheel drive variant will cost ₹68 lakh (around $70,000).
By comparison, the Model Y starts at $44,990 in the United States, ¥263,500 ($36,700) in China, and €45,970 ($53,700) in Germany.
Despite the high price tag, Tesla is targeting India’s premium EV segment, which currently represents just 4% of total vehicle sales. The company is betting on growing interest in electric mobility, especially among affluent urban consumers.
Tesla’s India entry has been long-awaited, and the launch of Model Y and supporting infrastructure signals the company’s intent to establish a foothold in the country’s evolving automotive landscape.
