Three held for bike theft, snatching spree in Dera Bassi

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Oct 18: In a major breakthrough, the Dera Bassi police have arrested three members of a motorcycle theft and snatching gang, recovering 10 stolen bikes with fake number plates and five mobile phones from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Jasvir Singh, alias Tinku, Gaurav Kumar, and Shubham Pandey — all residents of the Dera Bassi area, officials said.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans said the arrests were made under the supervision of DSP (Dera Bassi) Bikramjit Singh Brar during a joint operation conducted by the anti-narcotics cell and Dera Bassi police.

The investigation began after Aditya Kumar, a resident of Pandwala village, reported on October 11 that his silver Splendor motorcycle (UP-19-J-9938) had been stolen near the Mubarikpur liquor vend on October 5. Following the complaint, police registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Dera Bassi police station and formed a special team to track down the culprits.

During a naka (checkpoint) at Focal Point T-Point in Mubarikpur, police intercepted a man riding a silver Splendor motorcycle bearing a fake number plate (PB-70-F-4709). The rider, identified as Jasvir Singh alias Tinku, failed to produce any ownership documents and was arrested on the spot.

“His interrogation led us to his associates, Gaurav Kumar and Shubham Pandey, who were later arrested near the ESI Hospital in Mubarikpur,” SSP Hans said. Police also seized two motorcycles from them, and their disclosures helped recover seven additional stolen bikes and five snatched mobile phones.

According to SSP Hans, Gaurav Kumar acted as the mastermind and used a master key to steal parked motorcycles. “The gang would fit fake registration plates on the stolen vehicles and use them to commit mobile snatchings. They had also attempted to forge ownership documents but hadn’t succeeded,” he said.

Police have obtained the remand of all three accused for further questioning and expect more recoveries and revelations in the days ahead.
