Three held for killing woman, stuffing body in bag

by TheReportingTimes

LUDHIANA, July 10 — Police in Ludhiana have arrested three people for the murder of a 25-year-old woman whose body was found stuffed in a bag and dumped near Aarti Chowk, a crime initially disguised as the disposal of rotten mangoes.

The deceased, identified as Reshma, was a migrant from Uttar Pradesh. Those arrested include her father-in-law Kishan, mother-in-law Dulari, and a third man, Ajai Kumar, all originally from the same state. According to police, the trio had been staying in Maharaj Nagar for about two weeks, during which neighbours observed frequent arguments between Reshma and her in-laws.

“The case was cracked within four hours of the body being found,” said Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma. The investigation was led by SI Amarjit Singh under the supervision of DCP (City) Rupinder Singh, ADCP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal, and ACP Guriqbal Singh.

The bag containing Reshma’s body was initially spotted by Manoj Kumar, the landlord of the house where the family was staying. “I thought they were just shifting household items. It was only after seeing a video clip that I suspected something was wrong and informed the police,” Manoj said in his complaint.

Police suspect Reshma may have been murdered over ongoing domestic tensions. Preliminary findings indicate Kishan and Dulari had long-standing doubts about Reshma’s character. Her husband, Ramesh Kumar, reportedly lives in Uttar Pradesh and was not present in Ludhiana at the time of the incident.

Ajai Kumar, who accompanied Kishan while disposing of the body on a motorcycle, claimed he was misled. “He told me the bag had rotten mangoes,” Ajai told investigators.

Officers are now verifying the legality of Reshma’s marriage to Ramesh Kumar and whether it played a role in the alleged conspiracy to kill her.

ACP Guriqbal Singh credited the swift action by the police team with preventing the accused from fleeing to Uttar Pradesh. “Timely coordination and prompt response ensured they were taken into custody before they could escape,” he said.

Further details are being kept confidential to protect the integrity of the investigation, police added.
