Torrential rain floods Jalandhar homes, showrooms

Jalandhar, September 1, 2025: A torrential downpour accompanied by thunderstorms in the early hours of Monday inundated large parts of Jalandhar, leaving homes, shops, and showrooms submerged and causing widespread disruption. The city witnessed what officials described as its heaviest rainfall of the season, with waterlogging reported within an hour after the rain began around 2 a.m.

The Municipal Corporation said it received multiple complaints of building collapses, uprooted trees blocking roads, and snapped power lines. Electricity remained disrupted for more than five hours in several areas, according to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited officials.

Rainwater entered residential colonies and commercial hubs alike. Defence Colony and Model Town were among the worst hit. “Rainwater made way into several houses and shops in Defence Colony, something we have never seen earlier,” said Congress leader Angad Dutta.

Basements of several showrooms in Model Town were submerged. “At least 2–3 feet of rainwater accumulated in showrooms near Mata Rani Chowk. An electronics store’s stock of phones and speakers was floating in water. The estimated loss is around Rs 1 crore,” said Rajiv Duggal, president of the Model Town Market Association, adding that other shopkeepers in the area also suffered heavy damages.
