DERA BASSI, May 19: As part of the state-wide anti-narcotics initiative “Nasha Mukt Punjab,” police in Mohali district arrested two men with 550 cases of illegal English liquor during a checkpoint operation in Dera Bassi.
The arrests were made at a special inter-state naka set up under “Operation Seal – VIII” at the Nagla T-point near Handesra. A truck carrying the contraband was intercepted by a police team from the Dera Bassi subdivision.
The accused have been identified as Deda Ram and Bhupa Ram, both residents of Barmer district in Rajasthan. According to police, the liquor was labeled for sale in Chandigarh only and was being transported illegally across state lines.
“All naka teams have been instructed to strictly check every vehicle to curb smuggling of liquor and drugs,” said Dera Bassi Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikramjit Singh Brar. “This seizure is a direct result of those efforts.”
A case has been registered under Section 61 of the Excise Act at the Handesra police station. Authorities said investigations are underway to uncover the broader supply network involved in the illicit liquor trade.
