KAPURTHALA, May 26 — A late-night road accident near the Dhilwan flyover claimed two lives and left one person critically injured after a speeding Toyota Innova crashed into a stationary tractor attached to a sugar beet harvester.
The vehicle was reportedly en route from Ludhiana to Amritsar when the collision occurred. Police identified one of the deceased as Pankaj Aneja, 55, a textile businessman from Amritsar who was driving the car. He died on the spot. Another man, believed to have been seated in the front passenger seat, also lost his life but had not been identified at the time of filing this report.
The car’s rear passenger, Shashipal, sustained severe injuries and was initially rushed to a hospital in Beas. He was later referred to a medical facility in Amritsar, where he remains in critical condition. Aneja’s brother, Ravinder Kumar, who was also in the car, escaped with minor injuries.
“The Innova struck the tractor from the driver’s side. It appears the tractor was parked on the roadside due to a puncture but had no proper lighting or warning markers,” said Assistant Sub-Inspector Dalvinderbir Singh of Dhilwan police station.
Police have seized both the tractor and the attached sugar beet machine. The tractor driver, identified as Partap Singh from Alewal village in Zira, Ferozepur district, fled the scene and is currently absconding.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the law, and a search operation is underway to arrest him.
The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem and later handed over to their families.
