UK Envoy Visits Bhuttico, Backs India Ties in Textiles

by TheReportingTimes

Kullu, June 5 — On the second day of her three-day visit to the Kullu-Manali region, British Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett toured the Bhuttico Handloom Cooperative Society on Monday, reinforcing the cultural and economic partnership between the United Kingdom and India.

Rowett was accompanied by Rajinder S Nagarkoti, the UK Government’s Political, Press and Projects Adviser. The delegation interacted with Bhuttico’s management and local artisans, gaining firsthand insight into the age-old tradition of Himachali handloom weaving.

“This visit reflects the UK’s appreciation for India’s rich textile heritage and the skilled craftsmanship of its artisans,” said Rowett. “As part of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), our businesses and consumers will soon enjoy greater access to high-quality Indian goods, including textiles.”

She added that under the FTA, tariffs on 99 per cent of Indian goods — including apparel and traditional fabrics — will be eliminated, paving the way for a broader range of affordable and high-quality imports into the UK.

Founded in 1944, Bhuttico is known for its commitment to quality and its role in preserving traditional Himachali designs. The visit not only spotlighted the cooperative’s work but also underscored opportunities for Indian textiles in global markets.

The diplomatic engagement signals a deepening focus on artisanal industries within international trade dialogues, particularly between the UK and India.
