UN Warns of Global Food Crisis

by TheReportingTimes

Geneva, Oct 9: The United Nations has warned of an escalating global food crisis, citing climate-induced shocks and ongoing geopolitical conflicts as key drivers of rising hunger. In its latest report released Thursday, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlighted soaring prices of staple crops and disruptions to global supply chains.

“Millions of people are now at risk of food insecurity, particularly in regions already vulnerable due to conflict or extreme weather,” FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said. The report notes that droughts, floods, and heatwaves have devastated harvests in multiple countries, while the Ukraine conflict continues to disrupt grain exports critical to global markets.

The UN urged governments to strengthen emergency food assistance programs, invest in climate-resilient agriculture, and reduce waste in food supply chains. It also called for international cooperation to stabilize markets and ensure that developing nations receive timely support.

Experts warn that without swift global action, the crisis could exacerbate social unrest and migration pressures. “Food security is not only a humanitarian issue—it is a matter of global stability,” Qu said.
