04 May, 2024, Chandigarh – Chandigarh India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj said at a United Nations event that women’s leadership has increased in the Panchayati Raj system in India. Kamboj said that India can be proud of the Panchayati Raj system created for administration in rural areas and this has led to decentralization of power at the grassroots level. He also mentioned the work being done towards gender equality in India.

Speaking at India’s CPD57 side event at the UN, Ruchira Kamboj said grassroots women empowerment in India has had a transformative impact. Kamboj said that Panchayati Raj is an excellent example of direct democracy, in which all residents of a Gram Sabha participate in the Panchayat. This leads to decentralization of power. It is different from the traditional municipal governance models found in the world and the Panchayati Raj system promotes inclusive decision making.
