The political community has responded to wrestler Vinesh Phogat disqualification for being overweight hours before her gold medal match at the Paris Olympics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the pain with billions of Indians.

Vinesh Phogat Disqualification left billions disheartened

PM Modi described Vinesh Phogat as “India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian” and described her as a “champion among champions” in a post on X.

Sanjay Singh, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), demanded a boycott of the Olympics, referring to the 29-year-old’s disqualification as an “insult” to the nation as a whole.

“This is an insult to the nation, not to Vinesh. Vinesh Phogat was poised to make history globally; he believed that it was a serious injustice to have disqualified her for being 100 grams overweight. The entire nation supports Vinesh; the Indian government ought to step in right away; if this is rejected, the country ought to abstain from the Olympics,” he tweeted.

The disqualification, according to BJP MP Karan Bhushan Singh, is a “loss for the country“. He told news agency ANI, “The Federation will take this into consideration and see what can be done.”

Notably, Brij Bhushan Singh, the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a former BJP MP who has been accused of sexually abusing female wrestlers, is the father of Karan Bhushan Singh.

Mansukh Mandaviya, the minister of sports, will address the Lok Sabha at 3 pm over the wrestler’s startling disqualification prior to her last match.

As the first female wrestler from India to compete in an Olympic wrestling final, Vinesh Phogat was guaranteed a silver medal and was set to face American Sarah Hildebrandt for the coveted gold.

Regretfully, the 29-year-old wrestler will not return home with a medal from the Olympics in Paris. She had to lose the two kilograms she had gained during her Tuesday semi-final match in order to compete in the final. Upon weighing in on Wednesday, it was discovered that Vinesh Phogat weighed 150 grams too much. To reach the allowed maximum, the wrestler cycled, skipped, and jogged all night.

Shortly after the heartbreaking news of her disqualification spread, Vinesh Phogat was admitted to the hospital in Paris as a result of dehydration.
