West Bengal Launches New Scheme to Support Small-Scale Fishermen

by TheReportingTimes

Kolkata, Aug 10: The West Bengal government on Sunday announced the launch of ‘Matsya Bandhu,’ a welfare scheme designed to support small-scale fishermen by providing subsidized fishing gear, safety equipment, and financial assistance. The scheme targets thousands of families dependent on fishing along the state’s coastline.

Addressing the fishermen at the launch event, the state Fisheries Minister said, “Our goal is to improve the livelihood of fishermen and promote sustainable fishing practices.” The government plans to collaborate with local cooperatives to ensure efficient distribution of resources under the scheme.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over declining fish stocks and the need to modernize traditional fishing methods.
