JALANDHAR, Jan 2: Even as construction work continues at Burlton Park, young girl cricketers in Jalandhar are finding ways to stay on the pitch, thanks to the efforts of women’s cricket coach Sharandeep Kaur.
Kaur currently trains about 25 girls aged 11 to 20, offering free coaching with the support of the Jalandhar Cricket Association. With access to the park restricted, she has been arranging practice sessions at alternative locations to ensure regular training.
To provide continuity, Kaur has announced the formation of a dedicated girls’ cricket club called “Fast and Fearless.” The initiative also involves parents, who are assisting in identifying a temporary practice venue.
“The idea is to create a stable space for girls to train and grow, even when facilities are limited,” Kaur said.
Several of the players come from families with limited financial means, but their commitment to the sport remains strong. The girls attend school during the day and head straight to practice in the evening, inspired by watching professional cricketers on television.
Sixteen-year-old Khushboo said her family struggled to afford cricket equipment. “It was difficult, but my father encouraged me to continue. He told me not to give up on my dream,” she said.
Kaur, who teaches physical education at a government school in Adarsh Nagar, has long been involved in developing girls’ cricket in the district. She believes the new club will serve as a platform for more young players from Jalandhar to enter competitive cricket.
