Winter Session ends without debate on Delhi air crisis

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI, Dec 19 — A planned discussion on Delhi’s air pollution did not take place Friday after Parliament was adjourned sine die, ending the Winter Session without deliberation on the worsening smog gripping the National Capital Region.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned indefinitely, halting parliamentary business on the final day of the session. The air pollution debate had been scheduled in the Lower House.

Lawmakers from across parties, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and Bansuri Swaraj, were expected to raise concerns over rising particulate matter levels and the growing burden of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.

“Air quality has become a daily struggle for families in Delhi and surrounding areas,” a senior MP said. “Parliament should have discussed this.”

Delhi has recorded “very poor” air quality on multiple days in recent weeks, with smog disrupting flights, road traffic and outdoor activity. Doctors say prolonged exposure increases health risks, particularly for children, older adults and those with chronic conditions.

Environmental experts have repeatedly pressed for stronger enforcement of emission norms, better management of vehicular pollution and coordinated steps to control stubble burning in neighboring states.

The adjournment without discussion drew criticism online, with activists and residents saying the absence of debate delays policy attention on one of the country’s most pressing urban health challenges.
