by TheReportingTimes

LUDHIANA, May 27: A woman impersonating a nurse was arrested on Sunday for allegedly attempting to abduct two newborns from the gynaecology ward of the Civil Hospital here. Police have identified the accused as Sumiti, a resident of Ludhiana.

According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. when the woman entered the ward dressed as a nurse and approached Robinpreet Kaur, who had delivered a baby girl on May 23. Claiming the child needed a check-up, the woman picked up the infant and walked toward another ward.

Sensing something was wrong, the baby’s father, Harpal Singh, immediately alerted hospital staff and followed the woman. “I found her in another ward holding another child and heading toward the exit. When I confronted her, she couldn’t give a clear explanation for having both infants,” Harpal told police.

The second child was later identified as the newborn of Rohit, a resident of Shekhupura Basti, Sangrur. His wife was also admitted to the hospital at the time.

Senior Medical Officer Dr. Vinod confirmed that the hospital administration promptly filed a complaint with the police following the incident. “We are reviewing the breach in security protocols and will ensure stricter monitoring moving forward,” he said.

Sumiti has been booked under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to the kidnapping of a child. Police said further investigation is underway to determine if the woman acted alone or was part of a larger network.
