PATIALA, June 21– A 28-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh lost her leg in a tragic accident at the Patiala railway station on Friday after she slipped while attempting to board a moving train, railway officials confirmed.
The woman, who was travelling with her parents from Datia to Amritsar aboard the Mumbai-Amritsar Dadar Express, had stepped off the train at platform number one to buy refreshments during a brief halt at the station.
According to Inspector Jaswinder Singh, Station House Officer of the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident occurred when the woman tried to reboard the train as it began moving. “She slipped and fell into the narrow space beside the track,” he said. “She has lost her leg in the incident.”
The train was halted immediately, and the woman was rushed to a government hospital in Patiala, where she is currently receiving treatment.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, showing two to three passengers successfully boarding the moving train moments before the woman attempts the same and falls.
Railway officials reiterated warnings against boarding or alighting from moving trains, a recurring cause of serious injuries and fatalities. “Despite repeated announcements and signage at stations, such tragic incidents continue,” the SHO added.
The family was en route to Amritsar to offer prayers at the Golden Temple, GRP officials said. The woman’s parents remained onboard and were later reunited with her at the hospital.
Authorities urged passengers to follow safety protocols strictly and avoid taking unnecessary risks during train halts.
