Chandigarh, Oct 5: World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on October 5 to honor educators and acknowledge their significant contributions to shaping the lives and futures of students and society.

The 2025 observance includes well-wishes, messages, and inspirational quotes to express gratitude and admiration for teachers’ dedication and impact.

The day serves as an occasion to reflect on the importance of education and the people who make it possible.

World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on October 5, was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994. The day commemorates the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set international standards for the rights and responsibilities of teachers.

The recommendation, jointly developed by UNESCO and the International Labour Organization (ILO), aimed to recognize the essential role of teachers in shaping education and society. It highlighted principles such as fair recruitment, appropriate training, career development, and working conditions.

Since 1994, World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated worldwide to honor teachers’ contributions to education and society. Over 100 countries now participate, organizing events, conferences, and award ceremonies to highlight teachers’ achievements and advocate for their rights.

Each year, UNESCO chooses a theme to emphasize pressing educational concerns. Themes have ranged from “Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery” to “Empowering Teachers.” In 2025, the focus is on “Innovative Teaching in a Changing World”, reflecting the challenges and opportunities of modern education, digital learning, and climate-conscious curricula.World Teachers’ Day serves as a reminder that teachers are pivotal not only in transferring knowledge but also in shaping values, critical thinking, and societal development. It encourages governments, communities, and organizations to support teachers through fair policies, recognition, and professional development.

Schools, universities, and educational institutions around the world host seminars, workshops, and awards to recognize teachers. Social media campaigns amplify their voices, celebrating their dedication, creativity, and resilience.
