Zirakpur Begins Dog Sterilisation Drive

by TheReportingTimes

Zirakpur, May 6: After nearly a year’s hiatus, the Zirakpur Municipal Council resumed its dog sterilisation drive on Tuesday, beginning with the Hermitage Park Society in Dhakoli.

A four-member team was deployed to catch strays in the area, marking the first day of the renewed campaign.

According to officials, nine stray dogs were caught on Day 1 of the drive.

The move comes as incidents of dog bites continue to rise across Zirakpur and surrounding areas, triggering concern among residents.

In Dera Bassi’s Bhagat Singh Nagar and Balaji Nagar alone, two bite cases were reported yesterday.

A child named Saahil was bitten in Street No. 4 of Bhagat Singh Nagar, while an eight-year-old boy, son of Raman Kumar, sustained injuries in Balaji Nagar.

Similar reports have emerged from Baltana, Peermuchhala, VIP Road, and Lohgarh. In a particularly alarming incident in January, five people — including two children — were attacked by a stray dog in Lohgarh.

The sterilisation programme had been halted in September 2024 after the agency responsible for the effort failed to obtain a mandatory no-objection certificate (NOC).

With operations now resuming, local authorities hope to reduce the stray population and minimise the risk of future attacks.
