2,979 challaned for smoking violations in Amritsar

by TheReportingTimes

Amritsar, June 4– The Health Department has issued 2,979 challans in the past year for violations of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), collecting ₹97,780 in penalties in Amritsar. However, the growing use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices among youth remains a serious concern.

Pulmonologists caution that e-cigarettes, often perceived as safer, carry high nicotine levels and harmful chemicals, posing long-term health risks. Dr Rominder Kaur of Fortis Escorts Hospital said the appealing flavours and designs often mislead youth, making them vulnerable to nicotine addiction and cardiopulmonary complications.

Dr Sandeep Kumar Sharma pointed out that many end up dual-using vapes and cigarettes, increasing harm. “The only safe option is complete cessation with medical help and behavioural counselling,” he said.

Civil Surgeon Dr Kirandeep Kaur stressed that selling tobacco within 100 yards of schools or to minors is punishable by law. She said the department is conducting regular awareness drives in educational institutions to counter the spread of e-cigarettes, banned under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.
