India, UK mark Tech security pact with AI, telecom, minerals strides

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, July 24:  India and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to the Technology Security Initiative (TSI), marking one year of collaboration in cutting-edge technologies aimed at boosting economic growth and national security.

In a joint statement released by the UK government on Thursday, both countries celebrated key milestones achieved since the TSI’s launch in 2024 during then Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit to India. The initiative, part of the India-UK Vision 2035, is seen as a strategic pillar in the evolving bilateral relationship.

“Both parties welcomed the Initiative’s achievements to date and underscored the transformative potential of the TSI to deliver cutting-edge innovations and generate investment across the entire technology value chain,” the statement said.

Over the past year, TSI has made significant progress in telecom, artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and critical minerals. A notable highlight was a GBP 7 million joint research programme on Future Telecoms, supporting Open RAN development and 5G/6G testbeds through collaboration between India’s Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and the UK’s Smart RAN Open Network Interoperability Centre (SONIC).

In AI, the first UK-India Conference was held in Bengaluru in February 2025, focusing on responsible AI development and governance.

The Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory, launched under the TSI, completed its first phase, with GBP 1.8 million sanctioned for Phase Two. This phase includes creating a digital data infrastructure and a satellite campus at the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad.

In the health technology domain, a partnership between the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and India’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the FEMTECH initiative has bolstered efforts in women-oriented medical technologies.

Looking forward, the TSI will set up several ambitious projects:

  • A UK-India joint centre for AI to promote trusted AI development
  • An India-UK Connectivity and Innovation Centre for secure 5G/6G and AI-driven telecoms
  • A Critical Minerals Guild to ensure sustainable and secure supply chains
  • A Biotechnology Accelerator focusing on biofoundries, bioprinting, and sustainable agriculture

The two nations also plan to deepen collaboration in graphene and 2D materials, while paving the way for future work in quantum technologies, semiconductors, and advanced materials.

The statement called upon industry, academia, and startups to fully leverage TSI’s platforms, reinforcing that the initiative is vital to aligning national security priorities and fostering future-ready innovation across both economies.
