Keralam, AUGUST 1: State administrative bodies and emergency medical services in Keralam have initiated widespread relief efforts following intense cloudburst conditions that caused four fatalities across southern districts. Health Minister K Muraleedharan directed senior health authorities to conduct an emergency virtual meeting with District Medical Officers and National Health Mission managers to assess relief camp management and establish district-wise medical support systems.
The administrative response comes after an extraordinary downpour recorded up to 361 mm of rain within 12 hours, causing localized landslides and slope failures in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki. Explaining the operational framework established for ground recovery, KSDMA Member Secretary Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose affirmed that state agencies and grassroots volunteers are collaborating seamlessly to assist affected communities.
“They all work in tandem with the fire and rescue service, and they coordinate. So while the might of fire and rescue is seen to be undermined many a time, they are our workhorses, you know. They are the ones who are really extending their arms to every part of Kerala. NDRFs are essentially meant for the last mile, you know, that extra edge when you have difficulties in cutting across certain places,” Kuriakose declared. He noted that approximately 10,000 Aapda Mitra volunteers and an equal number of Civil Defence personnel are actively supporting emergency operations alongside nine deployed NDRF units.
Reviewing the impact of the overnight storm, Kuriakose maintained that timely alerts helped mitigate loss of life despite severe infrastructure damage. “So essentially, what we have seen is fatality numbers are very low, thankfully. We have two deaths reported from Idukki and two from Kottayam,” he stated. Detailing the nature of the weather event, he added, “Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki experienced extremely heavy rainfall measuring up to 361 mm at places in the last maybe 24 hours or so. Much of the rain spell was after about 10 o’clock at night and until the early morning. That has caused a number of landslides in slope-cut faces where there are roads and houses and all that. And we have also seen some debris flows happening here and there. It’s just a cloudburst, that’s it. Nothing else, nothing big”.
With the intense weather system moving northward toward regions between Thrissur and Kasaragod, officials expect sustained precipitation in northern districts before conditions begin to ease, while local authorities remain on high alert to manage relief activities across all impacted zones.
