New Delhi, Aug 1 — The Election Commission on Friday announced that Vice Presidential elections will be held on September 9, setting the stage for a key constitutional contest amid ongoing political realignments.
The notification for the election will be issued on August 7, while August 21 has been fixed as the last date for filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place the following day on August 22, and the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be August 25, the EC said.
Polling will be held only if there is more than one candidate, and votes will be counted the same day.
The post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21. He had taken over as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022, succeeding M. Venkaiah Naidu.
The announcement has triggered activity in political circles. The Opposition INDIA bloc has announced that it will field a joint candidate, while the ruling BJP is expected to begin consultations with its allies next week, according to party sources.
The newly elected Vice President will serve a full five-year term from the date of taking office.
