Dispur, July 22: The flood situation in Assam has turned critical after 21 people drowned in a single day, driving the total death toll this season to 31. According to data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, over 5.64 lakh citizens across 12 districts are currently reeling under the impact of rising water levels.
During an on-spot assessment in Sivasagar, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each flood victim. The Chief Minister affirmed that the administration remains fully committed to supporting displaced families through long-term recovery efforts.
“We will immediately give a relief of Rs 4 lakh to the relatives or families of every deceased,” Sarma stated while speaking to media persons. “I will also try to help them in future.”
Sarma maintained that while relief distribution in designated camps is running smoothly, submerged transportation networks have temporarily hindered aid delivery to certain marooned pockets. Disaster agencies noted that Sivasagar alone accounts for nearly 3.6 lakh affected individuals, with the Meteorological Department issuing continued weather alerts for heavy rains in the coming days.
