Hanumangarh, August 2: A 25-year-old youth from Apuwala village in Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district, Dharminder Burhak, tragically drowned in a lake in Freiburg, Germany, where he had gone to pursue higher studies and realise his dream of becoming a doctor.

The incident occurred around 11 pm on July 19 when Dharminder, accompanied by friends, was walking along the banks of a lake. He reportedly entered the water and drowned under unclear circumstances.

After nearly two weeks of relentless efforts, and at a cost of several lakh rupees, his family succeeded in bringing his body back to India. The mortal remains arrived in Apuwala on Saturday.

“The entire process was extremely complicated and emotionally exhausting. We got help from the Freiburg Institute and several others, but it was still a huge financial and logistical burden,” a family acquaintance said.

Dharminder’s father, Rameshwar Lal Burhak, is a bookseller in Nohar. Grieving relatives and villagers gathered at their home to pay their last respects to the young man, remembered as bright and determined.

A formal statement from the family is awaited.
