MEERUT, Aug. 18 — An Indian Army soldier returning to duty in Srinagar was allegedly beaten up by toll plaza staff at Bhuni toll plaza on the Meerut–Karnal highway in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday.

The soldier, identified as Kapil Kavid, was travelling with his cousin to Delhi airport to catch a flight when the incident occurred. A video of the assault surfaced online, showing staff members pinning Kapil to a pole, pulling his hands back, hitting him with sticks, and hurling abuses.

According to Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rakesh Mishra, the clash began when Kapil requested toll exemption. “Kapil claimed his village falls under the toll-free zone and requested exemption. The discussion turned heated and staff members allegedly assaulted him,” Mishra said.

Kapil’s family lodged a complaint at Sarurpur police station, after which police registered a case. “Four accused have been arrested after reviewing CCTV footage and video evidence. Two teams are currently working to apprehend the remaining suspects,” SP Mishra added.

The incident has sparked anger in the soldier’s village, with locals demanding strict action against all those involved.
