Punjab Govt Disburses Flood Relief Payout in Record Time

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, October 13, 2025: Setting a new benchmark for disaster relief, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has completed the distribution of ₹20,000 per acre compensation to flood-hit farmers in just 30 days — well before the scheduled deadline.

The special Girdawari, ordered on September 11 to assess crop losses across flood-affected areas, was supposed to be completed in 45 days. However, the government began transferring compensation by the 30th day, marking one of the fastest response efforts in the state’s history.

The floods had ravaged 2,508 villages and damaged nearly 3.5 lakh acres of farmland. Without waiting for Central assistance, the Punjab government released additional relief of ₹13,200 per acre from its own resources. All payments are being directly credited to farmers’ bank accounts to ensure full transparency and eliminate middlemen.

The administration also expedited surveys of damaged homes — 30,806 in total — and increased compensation for partially damaged houses from ₹6,500 to ₹40,000. Families who lost members are being provided ₹4 lakh each, while those who lost livestock and poultry have also been compensated.

Officials said the entire process — from assessment to compensation — was executed through an online portal, making it the most transparent flood relief operation so far. In Ajnala subdivision alone, over ₹5 crore has been transferred to affected households.

The government has also launched efforts to restore cultivability under its “Jiska Khet, Uski Ret” initiative, along with Mission Chardikala, aimed at rebuilding flood-hit villages.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the timely disbursal was proof that the state government “acts faster than it speaks.”
“When others were busy playing politics over floods, our focus was to reach every farmer, every home, every affected family. Before Diwali, we wanted to ensure our people could stand on their feet again,” Mann said.

The government maintained that the record-breaking relief effort reflects the “true spirit of Punjabiyat” — standing together in adversity and turning crisis into collective resilience.
