Ludhiana, October 15, 2025: The Punjab government has introduced a new concept that blends education with public health — turning Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) in government schools into health awareness camps. On October 17, government schools across Ludhiana will host a special ‘Hypertension and Mental Health Awareness Drive’ to screen parents and guardians for blood pressure and mental well-being.
The initiative, part of Mission Swasth Kavach, is being run in collaboration with Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana. The idea is to make schools not just spaces of learning but also hubs for community health.
Deputy District Education Officer (Secondary) Amandeep Singh said each school must check the blood pressure of at least 100 parents or visitors. “All schools have been provided with BP machines. The aim is to raise awareness about hypertension and mental health while encouraging students to take part in social service,” he said.
Students and teachers trained in first aid will assist with the checkups, taking each participant’s BP three times for accuracy. Health mentors in every school will coordinate the drive and upload data via Google Forms. The Education Department has made it clear that principals will be held responsible for any negligence.
Officials said the campaign reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to linking learning with well-being. Parents attending PTMs will now get a free health check alongside updates on their children’s academic progress.
Education authorities believe the Ludhiana model could serve as an example for other districts, helping promote awareness about physical and mental health while strengthening the connection between schools, families, and community welfare.
