Applications invited for Chandigarh environment panels

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Dec 14: The UT environment department has invited applications from eligible professionals and experts for appointment to Chandigarh’s environmental clearance bodies — the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC).

The move follows the Centre’s decision to reconstitute both panels, which play a key role in assessing and approving development projects requiring environmental clearance.

“Qualified professionals with relevant experience are encouraged to apply for nomination as chairperson or members of SEIAA and SEAC,” an environment department official said.

SEIAA acts as the final authority for granting environmental clearances, while SEAC provides technical appraisal and expert recommendations on project proposals.

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria prescribed under the MoEF&CC notification issued in 2006, officials said, adding that selections would be made as per provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

SEAC members are drawn from sectors such as environmental science, forestry, economics and other related disciplines, and are responsible for examining project feasibility, environmental impact and risk assessment.

“These committees ensure that projects comply with environmental norms before approvals are granted,” the official said.

The last date for submission of applications is December 26. Appointments to both bodies will be for a tenure of three years.
