Chandigarh/Mohali/Panchkula, Jan 15: Dense fog and poor visibility crippled operations at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport on Wednesday, leading to the cancellation of 21 flights. Arrivals were particularly affected, with a thick blanket of fog forcing the cancellation of all incoming flights after 9:20 pm.
The airport witnessed a total of 12 arrival and nine departure cancellations. Many other scheduled flights faced delays of up to five hours, leaving passengers stranded for most of the morning and evening hours.
“Flight operations almost came to a standstill early in the morning and late in the evening,” a spokesperson for the airport mentioned on Wednesday.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Thursday, warning of continued dense fog and cold wave conditions across the region. While weather is expected to remain dry through Jan. 17, experts noted that a gradual rise in minimum temperatures is likely over the next five days as a fresh Western Disturbance approaches the region.
