Dog Bite Treatment Now Universal in Punjab: Health Minister

Mann Govt Removes Cost Barrier for Rabies Vaccine

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Jan 16: To curb rabies fatalities, the Bhagwant Mann-led government has universalized anti-rabies services through its expansive network of neighborhood clinics. The state-wide rollout ensures that the full course of the vaccine is provided at no cost to residents, eliminating the panic and expense typically associated with animal bites.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh noted that the systemic gaps of the past—where victims often abandoned treatment due to distance—have been closed. “By ensuring timely, complete treatment close to people’s homes, we are building a safer, healthier Punjab,” he said regarding the updated health policy.

The clinics, which currently treat nearly 70,000 patients daily, now offer structured follow-up and medical supervision for all dog bite victims. The shift in policy prioritizes the convenience of citizens, particularly the elderly and children who are most vulnerable to such incidents. Officials noted that the reform reflects a broader philosophy of strengthening frontline health systems to anticipate public risks.

Beyond the immediate medical care, the government has focused on patient counseling to ensure every victim completes the full vaccination cycle. The Health Minister mentioned that the move has already seen a positive response, with thousands of residents successfully finishing their treatment schedules without the stress of losing wages or waiting in long hospital queues.
