Chandigarh, Jan 23: A new unified parking pass system will become available for Chandigarh residents next week, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla announced today. Starting January 27, residents can avail unlimited parking at all paid lots for a monthly fee of Rs 500 for cars and Rs 250 for two-wheelers.

The announcement came during a review of the Municipal Corporation’s achievements over the past year. The Mayor mentioned that the civic body has seen a significant turnaround since last January, transitiong from a state of financial distress to a period of active infrastructure development.

The Mayor credited a cooperative approach between the administration, the BJP organization, and central leadership for the influx of development funds. She noted that the Rs 125 crore grant from the Union Government has allowed the corporation to address long-standing issues, including the modernization of waste management and the upgrade of city roads.

Infrastructure projects mentioned during the briefing include the near-total replacement of old water and sewer lines and the ongoing beautification of city roundabouts. The Mayor also said that the long-pending agreement with door-to-door waste collectors has been finalized, further streamlining the city’s sanitation efforts.

Financial stability is being further bolstered by new advertising tenders and the recovery of vendor license fees. The Mayor mentioned that the corporation expects to see substantial revenue growth by the end of the current fiscal year in March 2026.

Regarding the acquisition of the central grant, the Mayor said the process was handled through direct coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the UT Administrator.

“I received no support from the local Member of Parliament in securing the funds, and his presence in the house was also absent,” the Mayor said.
