Chandigarh, Feb 15: The Shiromani Akali Dal has bolstered its presence in Sangrur with the induction of industrialist-politician Arvind Khanna, who ended his association with the Bharatiya Janata Party earlier this Sunday. The move was finalized during a personal visit by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal to Khanna’s home, where the leader was immediately assigned a key supervisory role for the constituency.
Khanna’s political journey includes two terms as an MLA and a recent stint as the vice-president of the Punjab BJP. Despite his active participation in the last two major election cycles, he reportedly sought a new platform that aligned more closely with the regional dynamics of the Sangrur district and its rural heartland.
“Mr. Khanna has been serving Sangrur for more than two decades and has been instrumental in carrying out various social initiatives,” declared Sukhbir Singh Badal during the induction ceremony. The SAD chief maintained that the inclusion of such an experienced leader, along with a group of supporters from both the BJP and Congress, would significantly enhance the party’s outreach efforts.
By appointing Khanna as the Halka Incharge, the SAD intends to leverage his long-standing ties to the Sangrur community and his philanthropic background. Supporters noted that the shift reflects a strategic effort to consolidate local leadership. The party stated that all new members joining alongside Khanna would be given due respect and responsibilities as they work toward the party’s upcoming regional objectives.
