Delivery Costs Climb as Zomato Updates Platform Fee

Customers to pay more per order as fuel shortages and inflation squeeze food-tech margins

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, March 20: Zomato users will now pay a higher base platform fee of Rs 14.90 per order, following a recent update to the company’s billing structure. The increase of Rs 2.40 per transaction comes as the food delivery sector grapples with a deepening LPG crisis and surging crude oil prices. This marks the latest in a series of incremental hikes as the platform seeks to improve its unit economics.

A representative for the company maintained that the revised fee is a response to the shifting market conditions and the increased cost of managing a large-scale delivery fleet. Zomato declared that in the current files involving logistics and operational overheads, the impact of fuel inflation has become a primary driver for pricing changes. The platform asserted that these adjustments are essential for long-term growth and maintaining a reliable service for millions of users.

The timing of the hike is particularly notable as a shortage of commercial cooking gas has already impacted the operations of thousands of restaurants across the country. According to industry reports, many eateries have been forced to scale back menus or adjust operating hours. Zomato noted that the broader inflationary pressures affecting the industry are reflected in the new fee, as companies move to protect their margins against escalating logistics expenses.

This development follows a previous fee revision in late 2025 and keeps Zomato’s pricing in close alignment with its primary competitor, Swiggy. Market experts affirmed that the two giants typically follow a synchronized approach to these levies. As the cost of ordering food online continues to rise, the company stated it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure its business model remains sustainable amid the ongoing energy supply disruptions.
