Shimla, March 21: Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has introduced a streamlined budget for Himachal Pradesh, reducing the total outlay by ₹3,586 crore to focus on fiscal stability. Presenting the ₹54,928 crore budget on Saturday, the Chief Minister stated that the measure is necessary to navigate the mounting debt levels facing the state. He maintained that the decision represents a decisive step toward financial correction and long-term sustainability.

The proceedings were interrupted by protests as the Chief Minister declared that the state’s interests had not been adequately protected regarding revenue grants. He affirmed that the loss of federal compensation has placed an additional burden on the state’s resources. Despite the reduced budget size, the Chief Minister asserted that the welfare of the people remains a priority and that all major campaign promises will be honored.

The Chief Minister stated that the administration is prioritizing the completion of existing infrastructure. He affirmed that rather than launching numerous new ventures, the government has set aside ₹500 crore to finalize 300 pending projects identified across the state. He also asserted that his team would ensure that existing government buildings are utilized efficiently to avoid wasting public funds.

Addressing the state’s energy sector, the Chief Minister maintained that securing Himachal’s power rights is essential for future growth. He declared that the state is entitled to a fair share of its natural resources and criticized the lack of support in claiming these assets. He stated that the “Green Budget” initiatives would remain a cornerstone of his policy to ensure environmentally conscious development.

The Chief Minister noted that the government would actively work to close “unwanted institutes” to save resources for more productive sectors. He concluded that while the fiscal path is difficult, the administration is determined to strengthen the rural economy and provide relief to the common citizen through targeted social schemes.
