Hoshiarpur, March 31: A police investigation is underway in Hoshiarpur district after a statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar was found damaged in Nurpur Jattan village. Miscreants reportedly broke through a glass shield and lighting system to deface the monument, leading to an immediate deployment of security forces to prevent potential unrest in the region.
Local leaders noted that the protective glass and lights had been installed as a safeguard after the monument was targeted in mid-2025. During the previous June incident, authorities found slogans and graffiti at the site, which had already raised the profile of the location as a sensitive area.
Speaking from the scene, Sarpanch Shingara Ram noted the distress among the local community following the discovery of the damage.
“The statue has been desecrated, and the protective arrangements have also been destroyed,” Ram maintained. “People are upset, and we have informed the authorities.”
Following an assessment of the site, Garhshankar MLA Jai Krishan Rouri asserted that the government would not tolerate attempts to incite tension. He was joined by senior police officers who stated that all available technical evidence, including nearby camera feeds, is being examined to track the suspects.
Government officials declared that the situation is being closely monitored to ensure that fringe elements do not succeed in creating regional instability. Residents have been urged to remain calm and disregard unverified reports circulating online, as the administration continues its efforts to uphold law and order.
