Punjab security deteriorating, Randhawa tells Lok Sabha after Chandigarh blast

Cites drone smuggling, police attacks; holds AAP and Centre accountable for rising violence

CHANDIGARH, April 2, 2026 — A day after a bomb attack targeted a BJP office in Punjab, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa raised alarm in Parliament over what he described as worsening security conditions in the border state.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Randhawa said repeated incidents of violence point to a growing link between criminal gangs and extremist elements. He called on the central government to enact tougher laws aimed specifically at dismantling these networks in Punjab.

“The situation in Punjab is becoming increasingly serious,” Randhawa said. “Gangsters are carrying out killings openly, and terrorist activities are on the rise. There is an urgent need for stricter laws.”

He also pointed to cross-border threats, stating that drones from Pakistan continue to deliver arms, ammunition and drugs into Punjab. According to Randhawa, the lack of effective interception raises questions about border security management.

“The Border Security Force oversees a large portion of the international border, yet drones are repeatedly breaching it,” he said. “This indicates gaps that must be addressed immediately.”

Randhawa listed several recent incidents to underline his concerns. He said Punjab has witnessed repeated attacks on police installations over the past four years. Among them was an assault on a police station in Bhendi Saida, Amritsar, shortly before the Chandigarh blast.

“In Gurdaspur, two policemen lost their lives, and the attack was linked to the ISI,” he said. “These are not isolated cases but part of a pattern.”

Criticizing the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, Randhawa said the administration led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has failed to contain the situation.

“Law and order has weakened significantly,” he said. “The state government bears responsibility for this decline.”

At the same time, he said the BJP-led central government must also be held accountable, particularly in matters of border control and national security.

Randhawa warned that Punjab, which has faced terrorism in the past, risks slipping back into instability if corrective steps are not taken swiftly. He said coordinated action between the state and Centre, along with stronger legislation, is essential to restore security.
