NEW DELHI, MAY 22 — Representative Shashi Tharoor cautioned federal authorities Friday that attempts to restrict the viral Cockroach Janta Party digital movement are highly unwise and ignore deep-seated economic frustrations among the country’s youth.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP issued the warning following the administrative suspension of the satirical group’s primary microblogging profile. Tharoor stated that a functioning democracy relies heavily on open channels for public grievances and described satire as a safe alternative to civic chaos.
“Democracy’s great virtue is the outlets it provides for public sentiment, frustration and grievances,” Tharoor asserted, adding that allowing citizens to air their concerns through comedy is inherently in the national interest.
The satirical initiative, launched by strategist Abhijeet Dipke, has amassed over 19 million followers on alternative media apps by focusing on issues like exam leaks and unemployment. The rapid expansion led to corporate pushback and technical blocks amid allegations of artificial traffic manipulation, which organizers have strongly denied.
The legislator noted that critics who view the digital trend as a partisan tool misinterpret its true nature. He observed that the platform maintains an independent stance, directing its humor toward both the opposition and treasury benches to highlight systemic governance flaws.
Tharoor stated that federal oversight boards should immediately reverse the local digital blocks placed on the movement’s communication handles. He affirmed that the scale of the online phenomenon reflects a genuine strain of national sentiment that cannot be managed through administrative censorship.
